IATF 16949 is a technical specification that outlines the requirements for a quality management system in the automotive industry. It was developed by the International Automotive Task Force (IATF) in conjunction with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and it supersedes the previous standard, ISO/TS 16949.
The IATF 16949 standard focuses on the development of a quality management system that ensures consistent quality and continuous improvement throughout the automotive supply chain. It includes requirements for the design, development, production, installation, and servicing of automotive products.
Adopting the IATF 16949 standard is voluntary, but it is widely used in the automotive industry as a requirement for doing business with automotive manufacturers. The standard is designed to help companies reduce the risk of quality issues and improve overall efficiency and effectiveness, which can lead to increased customer satisfaction and a stronger competitive position in the market.
IATF 16949:2016 outlines 463 requirements (in addition to the 321 ISO 9001:2015 requirements) that organizations must comply with in order to achieve 3rd-party certification. The 1st edition of this document was released in October of 2016 after the release of the ISO 9001 standard in September of 2015.
